Archstone Foundation is thrilled to introduce our inaugural online Report to the Field, reimagined to provide a comprehensive overview of our work to improve the health and well-being of older Californians and their caregivers. Taking the place of our long-standing biennial report, this online format marks a new chapter of Archstone Foundation's dedication to sharing our mission, vision, and work with our valued partners and stakeholders. With an emphasis on transparency, accessibility, and the power of collaboration, this report is meant to reflect and inspire the essential partnerships so critical to meaningful change.
With this digital format, we are modernizing our approach and creating a more immersive experience that fully conveys our story. You’ll hear directly from Christopher A. Langston, our President and CEO, and Heather M. Young, our Board Chair, about our vision for the future and how our grantmaking is organized to make lasting change. We aim to provide a deeper understanding of our work and the transformative impact we are collectively making.
What Coordinated, Equitable Care Looks Like
The report shows that 72% of newly awarded grants these past two years focused on care equity and reducing health disparities, making justice a central thread woven into Archstone Foundation’s mission of improving the health and well-being of older Californians and their caregivers. We continue to contend with the deleterious and intersecting elements of ageism, racism, sexism, and ableism in every facet of our grantmaking and operations. We are tremendously grateful to our partners and the communities they serve for their contributions to our learning, JEDI journey, and growth as an organization.
Within the report, we share a story that envisions the kind of equitable, integrated care we aspire to provide for all older persons. This story is a testament to our vision and the transformative potential of our strategies.
Promoting Teams, Enhancing Training, and Improving Technology
These strategies, all focused on coordinated care, are rooted in three foundational pillars, what we call the three Ts: promoting teams, enhancing training, and improving technology. We believe that these should overlap in practice to broaden the scope of care to encompass both medical and social services and cultivate a healthcare landscape that embodies equity, justice, and inclusivity for older Californians. Our report provides vivid insight into how these strategies are brought to life and are starting to ignite transformation in the care of older people.
Strategic Insight in Numbers
In addition to explaining our strategy, the Report to the Field provides the essential elements expected from an annual report. It details our grant awards (38 new grants representing $6.2 million in fiscal years 2022 and 2023). And it describes how we’ve allocated grants within our three strategic priority areas.
A Shift in Focus: From Legacy to Impact
The report also casts light on our evolving trajectory. While we value our legacy initiatives for the foundational role they have played in setting the stage for current and future work, we have now embarked on an exciting shift towards our Three T strategy areas. This transition signifies our commitment to embracing innovative methods and measuring their tangible impact on improving care and reducing disparities for older Californians and their caregivers.
Join Us in Making Our Vision a Reality
As we share the details of our developing work, we invite our current and prospective grantees, funding partners, stakeholders, and policymakers to join us. Our Report to the Field is more than a snapshot; it's our vision of how our partnerships can generate needed change. By spotlighting some of our work and our aspirations, we aim to demonstrate our accountability to older Californians and their caregivers and create an opportunity for collaboration and collective action to thrive. As we look ahead, narrowing the gap in racial and ethnic health disparities and fostering an inclusive care landscape remains the driving force of our work.
As you explore the report, we invite you to immerse yourself in the stories, insights, and numbers that paint a picture of our mission in action. We also encourage you to delve into our recently released series of Call to Partnership papers, which offer a deeper understanding of our thinking and strategy in the areas of teams, training, and technology.
We hope the Report to the Field sparks inspiration and prompts reflection on how you can join us in our shared goal of coordinated, equitable care for older adults and their caregivers.
