Who We Are

Our vision is for every older adult to thrive as they age.

Archstone Foundation is a nonprofit, non-partisan, private foundation dedicated to improving health and social care for all older adults in California. Since its inception, the Foundation has responded to the health needs of the people of our state by funding initiative-based grants, educational programs, and innovative responses to the emerging and unmet needs of the growing older adult population. We have also funded a wide range of grantees making important contributions in critical yet often overlooked areas of need.

Beyond demographics, we recognize that the landscape in which we—and our community partners—work is rapidly shifting. We know that direct service organizations in aging are facing unprecedented funding cuts. We know that access to care is imperative for aging with health, dignity, and well-being. And we know that politics and community power have direct and stepwise impacts on the health and well-being of older people.

To fulfill our mission to improve the health and social care for all older adults in California, we must ensure our grantmaking approach reflects the lived experience and needs of older adults and best supports the work of the organizations serving them. We do this by focusing on two aims: Mobilizing communities and amplifying older adult voices, and building the adaptability of organizations serving older adults.

By centering older adults’ voices in addressing challenges to aging well and equipping communities to self-organize and vocalize their needs to policymakers, we believe we can help spur the health and social care systems to reimagine the ways they operate and better meet the needs of all older adults.

By supporting community organizations in the ways most meaningful to them, we can help strengthen their ability to deliver health and social care services and become more resilient and more in charge of their own futures. It is our hope that through these efforts:

  • The health and social care system will respond to vocal communities of older adults and reorient itself to meet their needs.

  • The public will engage and support older adults in new ways, recognizing and valuing their contributions.

  • Organizations affected by funding cuts adapt and see new opportunities as a result of increased attention to older adult advocacy.

We hope you’ll join us in this important work.
