As Older Americans Month comes to a close, Archstone Foundation is proud to feature the work of one of its longtime partners and grantees. Humboldt Senior Resource Center (HSRC), in one of California’s most remote and geographically diverse counties, is challenging outdated assumptions about aging and demonstrating that connection, purpose, and dignity are not only possible in later life, but essential.
HSRC is a great example of an organization embodying the theme of this year’s Older Americans Month: “Flip the Script on Aging.”
Strong social connection is foundational to healthy aging—especially in rural communities, where isolation can be both a logistical and emotional challenge, leading to a cascade of physical and mental health challenges. At HSRC, connection isn’t an afterthought; it’s a core value embedded in everything it does.
Located in one of the most remote corners of California, Humboldt County spans more than 4,000 square miles of coastal forests, river valleys, and mountain terrain. While the region is known for its natural beauty and tight-knit communities, many of its residents are geographically isolated. HSRC meets older adults where they are, bridging the gaps created by the region’s geography and limited infrastructure. Its approach “flips the script” by reframing older adulthood to emphasize it as a time of contribution, resilience, and engagement.
Community-Rooted, Holistic Support
While the region’s densely forested terrain poses a challenge to social connection, HSRC has woven opportunities for connection into every service it offers. Whether it’s through a shared meal, a group activity, a phone call, or care coordination, each program is designed to promote engagement, safety, companionship, and a sense of purpose and overall well-being. The organization’s offerings include:
- Senior News, the North Coast’s only monthly publication for adults ages 50+
- Redwood Coast Village, a volunteer-driven aging-in-place network
- Senior home repair, nutrition, behavioral health, Adult Day Health and Alzheimer’s services, and the Multipurpose Senior Services Program
- Redwood Coast PACE, offering comprehensive healthcare supportive services for older adults with complex medical needs
During the past 50 years, the center has grown not only in size but also in its capacity to adapt to community needs. Each service is an intentional response to the experiences of the county’s older population, reflecting the organization's belief that aging should be met with dignity, opportunity, and support — not fear or marginalization.
Flipping the Script on Isolation: Jim’s Story
Isolation is not inevitable. One story that captures HSRC’s impact is that of Jim, a devoted husband caring for a wife who has advanced Parkinson’s disease. Initially hesitant to accept help, he shared with an HSRC social worker that he was feeling overwhelmed and hopeless. He said he could not envision a way forward and was experiencing suicidal thoughts.
With compassion and care, the social worker helped develop a plan for support, including weekly check-ins and coordinated respite care. Jim’s daughter began helping more regularly, a professional caregiver was brought in, and Jim connected with resources for family caregivers. Weeks later, Jim smiled during a follow-up conversation. He said he was feeling more capable and hopeful and beginning to reclaim a sense of balance. With the right support, he continued caring for his wife while maintaining his own quality of life and well-being.
Aging with Dignity, Everywhere
This story exemplifies what’s possible when we treat caregiving not as a burden to be borne alone, but as a shared responsibility supported by community.
Jim’s experience, and HSRC’s efforts every day, illustrate that older adults in even the most remote reaches of California not only deserve but can experience a connected, purpose-driven later life. By investing in relationships, responding to evolving needs, and honoring the humanity of everyone it serves, the center offers a model for how communities can flip the script on aging — not just in May but every day of the year.
Archstone Foundation is honored to support HSRC’s work and share in its vision of a society where older people are connected, valued, and thriving.
