Capacity Building
Strengthening Organizations and Systems
Are you working to improve access to health and social service care for older adults in California? Our Capacity Building grants offer up to $50,000 to support projects designed to help organizations that align with our principles of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) work more efficiently and effectively. These grants are meant to aid development at a structural level, increasing an organization’s ability to deliver on its mission over time. They are not intended to cover routine core operating expenses nor provide on-going programmatic support.
In 2019, the Capacity Building program replaced Archstone Foundation's prior small grants program for direct service organizations. Organizations providing direct support to older adults in California were invited to complete a screening questionnaire between July 9 and July 23, 2025 to determine eligibility to apply for a Capacity Building grant.
Capacity Building Opportunities
Archstone Foundation offers one annual Capacity Building Request for Proposals (RFP) opportunity. The RFP is open to any non-profit in California working to improve access to health and social care for older adults, in alignment with our principles of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion, which you can read more about here.

Catchafire Capacity Building Partnership
Given the overwhelming response we have had to our Capacity Building program, in which we usually receive five to ten times the number of applications than available grants, Archstone Foundation has also partnered with Catchafire, a social enterprise that helps fill the capacity building gap.
Catchafire matches professionals who donate their time with nonprofits who need their specific skills. For Archstone Foundation, the collaboration with Catchafire began in April 2021. Archstone Foundation is currently supporting over 100 aging service organizations, which includes current and past grantees, as well as applicants to our Capacity Building program, to have access to the Catchafire platform.
