We believe all older people, people with disabilities, and their caregivers deserve to thrive as they age. Unfortunately, we took a huge step in the opposite direction when Congress passed HR1, the “Big Beautiful Bill Act.”
From the largest cuts ever made to Medicaid to drastic reductions in SNAP food support, to regulations that would remove access to both Medicaid and Medicare for many legal immigrants, this legislation disproportionately hurts people already facing systemic barriers, widening disparities in care experienced by older adults of color, from rural populations, and in our LGBTQ+ communities.
The bill is long and complex, so for anyone seeking to understand its full impact on older adults, we recommend this comprehensive summary compiled by our grantee partners at Justice in Aging.
Archstone Foundation stands with older adults and our partners in this time of extreme challenge. Older people from all walks of life make irreplaceable contributions to our community. As a society, we must ensure they receive the care, support, and security we all deserve.
In the weeks and months to come, we’ll be sharing resources and helping our nonprofit partners build their capacity to respond quickly and effectively. We will work closely with our partners to collectively identify the most promising solutions.
Finally, we are continuing to listen to our partners and fellow community members, to ensure their experiences and concerns remain at the center of all this work. Already we’ve heard about the need for resources and a collective strategy to mobilize older people and other community members and help them share their powerful stories and experiences.
As a foundation, and as individuals who care deeply about the well-being of older adults and their families, we join in common cause with all who believe in dignity, safety, and the right to age without fear. Together, we strive to create a stronger, more resilient system – of health, wellness, community, and infrastructure – that provides for us all.
