In September 2019, Archstone Foundation awarded a grant to GeriPal to expand its podcast and blog.

In the August 27th episode of the GeriPal podcast, hosts Eric Widera and Alex Smith talk with Sean Morrison, MD, Director of the National Palliative Care Research Center and Chair of the Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at Mount Sinai and former President of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, about advance care planning.

His perspective is provocative. Dr. Morrison argues in his Journal of Palliative Medicine piece that we should stop putting resources into making advance care planning and advance directives work. Many years and $300 million, he notes, have been poured into advance care planning research. What do we have to show for it? More than 1,600 studies and 80 systematic reviews, he says, provide little valuable evidence that advance care planning and advance directives lead to goal-concordant care. A big part of the problem, Morrison says, is that the US healthcare system is currently not organized in ways to enable these interventions to work.

We encourage you to listen in to this unexpected but powerful and thought-provoking perspective.
