The Long-Term Services and Supports (LTSS) workforce is a mainstay for the growing number of California’s older adults and people with disabilities. Half of direct care workers in the state are naturalized citizens and non-citizens.
For the past two years, violent and unnecessary immigration enforcement across the nation and here in California has spread fear, sowed division, and torn communities apart. It has affected older adults, especially immigrants, their families, and the immigrants who care for them at home and in institutional settings. In response, Archstone Foundation partnered with California Community Foundation to develop a research brief describing the effects of this enforcement on the long-term care workforce in California.
The negative impact on direct care workers, the communities in which they live, and the critical care they provide is a malicious consequence of immigration cruelty that deserves more attention. If you are a funder, grantee, activist, organizer, or community leader interested in deeper involvement around this issue, please share this brief with your networks and contact Gerson Galdamez, Program Director of Advocacy and Policy: ggaldamez@archstone.org.
