Capacity Building

Strengthening Organizations and Systems

Capacity Building grants will offer up to $50,000 to support projects designed to help organizations work more efficiently and effectively. These grants are meant to aid development at a structural level, increasing an organization’s ability to deliver on its mission over time. They are not intended to cover routine core operating expenses nor provide on-going programmatic support.

In 2019, the Capacity Building program replaced Archstone Foundation's prior small grants program for direct service organizations. Organizations providing direct support for older adults and their caregivers in California are invited to apply for a Capacity Building grant.

Capacity Building Opportunities

Archstone Foundation offers two annual Capacity Building Request for Proposals (RFP) opportunities. One is a general Capacity Building funding opportunity, open to any non-profit serving older adults (or their caregivers) in California. The second is specific to organizations focused on serving racially, ethnically, or otherwise diverse older people with histories of disadvantage in order to reduce health disparities and advance racial equity.

  1. Supporting Communities Serving Older Adults Through Capacity Building
  2. Supporting Diverse Communities and Advancing Racial and Health Equity for Older Adults Through Capacity Building

The next opportunity to apply for a Capacity Building grant will begin in July 2024. Applications for the current round were due August 16, 2023 at noon. See details here.

Catchafire Capacity Building Partnership

Given the overwhelming response we have had to these Capacity Building RFPs, in which we usually receive five to ten times the number of applications than available grants, Archstone Foundation has also invested in Catchafire, a social enterprise and nonprofit that helps fill the capacity building gap.

Catchafire matches professionals who donate their time with nonprofits who need their specific skills. For Archstone Foundation, the collaboration with Catchafire began in April 2021, when we joined Annenberg Foundation and Weingart Foundation in supporting the SoCal Collaborative.

Archstone Foundation is currently supporting 100 aging service organizations, which includes current and past grantees, as well as declined applicants to our Capacity Building RFPs, to have access to the Catchafire platform.

If you are an Archstone Foundation grantee or applicant and are interested in receiving access to the Catchafire platform in the future, please contact Carly Roman or your program officer.
