On Friday, April 20th, the Korean Health, Education, Information and Research (KHEIR) Center will proudly debut its brand-new Adult Day Health Care (ADHC) Center. This jovial grand opening event will be held at the Center, located on 3030 W. 8th Street (@ Vermont) in Los Angeles, from 11:00a.m. to 3:00p.m. The 8,800 square foot ADHC-Vermont site is KHEIR's newest addition to now 2 large Adult Day Health Care Centers in Koreatown.

Originally located on Gramercy Place, the old ADHC solely served developmentally disabled adults. The new Vermont ADHC site now services frail elderly as well as the developmentally disabled. This exciting and much needed expansion allows KHEIR's ADHC Centers to serve and accomodate over 225 patients a day.

"This grand opening symbolizes the finale of countless hours of hard work and dedicated of everyone at KHEIR," said Laura Jeon, executive director of KHEIR. "The new Vermont ADHC Center is a major fulfillment of our goals to help the ever-growing elderly population. We are overjoyed to be able to expand our scope of services, as it promises a plan to reach out to neighboring communities in the future."

KHEIR established the first ADHC Center in the nation to cater to the linguistic and cultural needs of Korean American ederly. ADHC's provide health maintenance and rehabilitation services for disabled persons over the age of 18. Some services include skilled nursing on-site, personal care assistance (walking, going to the bathroom), physical, occupational and speech therapies, as well as nutritional, psychiatric, social, and transportation services.

Funding for the hiring of staff support and costly equipment and furniture purchase was supported greatly in part by a generous grant awarded to KHEIR from the Archstone Foundation. The Archstone Foundation is a private grantmaking organization, with assets totaling more than $140 million, whose mission is to "contribute toward the preparation of society in meeting the needs of an aging population." Their resources are used to help all generations plan for the aging process and support programs addressing the needs of the elderly in a three-fold manner: 1) healthy aging and independence; 2) quality of life within institutional settings; and 3)issues at the end of life.

Established in 1986, KHEIR Center has provided health, human and social services to the Korean American community for the past 15 years. In total, KHEIR serves approximately 20,000 clients each year.
